I created a section of road going right into the Subway Station plot from Tardis Square.
I may build a little starter pit to get started.

Okay, because so much corruption had been caused to the underground structure directly under the subway station plot, I talked it over with users who were online and the general consensus was that we should have the main subway station be under the Tardis. Got the main "box" built to house the subway station and started on the tunnels -- and ran into more underground building. I'm working on keeping it going, but it's going to be a process. Okay, if you're looking to help with the subway, here's what we need: - We're digging four 5x5 tunnels (1 in each direction)
- If you run into caverns, underground builds, etc. keep going in a straight line.
- Patch holes as much as possible with cobble. I can replace it with smooth stone later.
- Once we get the tunnels in place, we will build substations at the ends and lay in track.
- If you have ideas for making the central station more... "stationy", please let me know.

That's awesome. AuntBeast and I spent HOURS (literally) digging tunnels today. It's dangerous work (lots of lava and water and long falls) but it's coming along nicely. We're basically trying to extend the tunnels as far in each direction as possible. I think the plan is to have substations every certain number of blocks but that's up to the rail builders. I'm just doing as much admin help with this huge project as I can.
It's a huge undertaking but if we can get it set up right, I think it's going to really set our server apart even further.

I logged on today, and you'll be surprised when you see how much work AuntBeast got done while we weren't online. - I'm impressed! Also, as of 1 1/2 days ago, the current subway fund count (Currently overflowing into my own bank locker) is: 1) 3550 Regular Tracks 2) 906 Powered Tracks 3) 585 Redstone I can do another count later.... But currently we have over 4000 tracks. - That is enough for maybe one direction all the way to the end of the world and back (maybe). That's a LOT of tracks, but it seems like we are going to need a LOT of people participating to get this done quickly =P I think the community has this down, though... - Some people have put in some donations to the fund... and (I think it was Slashed) was working on getting some more resources. - I currently have 2 stacks of iron and a little bit of gold I'll melt down today to get converted into tracks. If you guys need anything else besides supplies, such as help digging in a tunnel, let me know and I'll come help out! -Robert

If you want to help dig, please do so. Here is what you need to know. Each tunnel is a 5x5 square. If we dig a 2x1 tunnel all the way to the edge of the world, Griff can magic wand everything else out. The thing is...dig the tunnel on the LEFT BOTTOM CORNER. Make certain the path is completely flat...fill holes, build bridges, etc. The important thing is that it is straight and flat. You are free to mine whatever you find, just backfill what you dig.
Diamond picks make it go much faster. In about 3 hours I was able to dig from spawn to EOW with mostly diamond picks. If you need a mod to help you get to the end of the tunnel, just ask, I'm certain they would be glad to put on their god panties for a cause.
There are donation chests set up somewhere, please feel free to dump cobble there. Also, if you are digging and run out of supplies, ask on chat for someone to tp to you. You have to have a big enough area for them to land in, so don't wait until the last minute.
----------------- I've suggested we put substations along the way at 500 block intervals with corrections for spawn. For example: spawn is -274. The first station should be at 0. Then next at 500, then next at 1000, then next at 1500. That way, it is consistent across the world and folks will be able to know where the closest one is.

I wish there was an easy way to reset the number for the center of spawn. If we could make dead-center 0,0 it would be easy to know where everything was relative to that.

The center of spawn isn't that important, because it isn't terribly far off. folks will always type /spawn to get there. Getting out at reliable locations is more important. Also, not sure of your god want...but is there any way to change the design of the ceiling and or walls to indicate WHICH way is spawn? They are long cart rides....it would be nice to be able to easily tell if you are heading towards civilization.

Regarding powered rail placement, the wiki says this: ________________________ 3 powered rails in a row on flat terrain is sufficient to boost a minecart from rest to the maximum speed of 8 m/s.
Thereafter, the optimal spacing of powered rails on a level track is to use 1 every 38 blocks (that is, a repeating pattern of 1 powered rail followed by 37 normal rails, then another powered rail, and so on) which maintains a constant minecart speed of 8 m/s. If gold is in short supply, it is possible to use powered rails with more space between them at the cost of reduced overall speed.
________________
I had begun counting out the powered rails according to this information. When I returned, someone has added a bunch of rails in varying distances from about 6-8.
There has not been much discussion (that I know of) regarding the placement of the rails. IMHO, if someone knows something the wiki doesn't, please let us know here so everyone can have the correct information.
Barring any changes, if you want to be a dear, grab a crapload of redstone torches and place one every 38 blocks. Then, the rail builders can come in quickly and place the powered rails/rails.
Each tunnel will have two tracks. The redstone torch goes in the center block.

Subway Update: - The tunnels have all been dug out in 4 directions and stretch from "End of World" to "End of World" in all 4 directions.
- I added glowstone floor runners and a center glowstone ceiling light runner. Hopefully that will keep the critters out of the tunnels.
- I added a color-coded strip going down the center of the floor between the tracks (or where the tracks will be). Off the top of my head right now I don't recall all of the colors -- but I believe the East is red, North is blue, South is yellow, and West is green.
- I placed a LARGE letter (N, S, E, W) above the tunnel entrances in the main subway.
- I set warps (SubwayNorth, SubwayWest, SubwaySouth, and SubwayEast) at the ends of each tunnel (in case someone wants to explore .
- We have three chests in the main subway (/warp Subway) with cobble, sand, gravel, etc.
Still to do: - Lay tracks and get carts moving.
- Walk the line above ground and find interesting "stops" along the way.
- Create sub-stations with exits to places around the map.
- Work on reducing motion-sickness for rail rides.
- Make the main subway station more... "Stationy".

I created several exits/entrances along different spots in the subway. Basically I walked the lines above-ground and looked for places (towns, outposts, projects, and cool building areas) and made them "points of interest". I connected as closely as possible to Torchwood (right next to that big, ugly, single-block pillar) so I hope that works.
I spent a couple hours this morning and a few hours on it tonight and probably still need a lot more. If you have suggestions for stopovers, let me know.
Note: You can use the "floating glass X in the sky" as a general guide right now -- it follows the length of the tunnels.
